Southon Yard Photos

Southon Yard, by Michael Campbell, won first prize in the ExpoNG 2004 Shoebox Layout competition.
The scale is 009, the style of the buildings is similar to the Welsh slate lines such as
the Ffestiniog, but Michael runs whatever locos he likes (or his friends bring along!).

The turntable, however, was modelled on a photo of the one at Pilton Yard on the L&B.
The Ffestiniog Railway had a 22-foot turntable behind the shed at Boston Lodge (which was the
inspiration for this engine shed). The Southon Yard turntable works out at 25-foot and Michael
reports that getting a Double-Fairlie on that is pretty tight -- it overhangs a fair bit!
Michael's table is driven by a set of gears and shafts, with the motor in the workshop.

The entire layout fits into the shoebox including the hidden sidings, backscene (which rolls up)
and all scenics. However the lighting, support, controller and power supply all travel separately,
as allowed in the competition rules. The layout has a 30 watt tungsten striplight built into the fascia.

These photos were taken at an 009 Society meeting by Nick Pidgely.
